Testing With TEARA-SCARS
The Triangle East Amateur Radio Association (TEARA) and the
Smithchart Amateur Radio Society (SCARS) are pleased to announce
their 2018 schedule for amateur radio examinations. Exams
are given the third Saturday of every month except July and
December at 9:30 a.m. at the Red Cross office in Smithfield,
North Carolina. The Red Cross is located at 801 South
Third Street in downtown Smithfield. Additional directions
are given below.
For 2018, the dates are:
*** No session in July
*** No session in December
To reach the Red Cross traveling from the west or east, take
U.S. 70 Business into downtown Smithfield. (U.S. 70 Business is
Market Street.) Look for the intersection with U.S.
301. If coming from the west, turn right, or if from the
east, turn left onto U.S. 301 South. Go to the next
stoplight (about 1/2 mile) and turn right. (Note that this
intersection shows "Brogden Road" to the left, but you want to
turn right.) Go one block to Third Street and turn
right. The Red Cross will be on your right.
If you are coming from the north or south on I 95, take Exit 95
onto U.S. 70 Business West into downtown Smithfield to the
intersection with U.S. 301. Turn left onto U.S. 301 South
and follow the directions in the paragraph above. If you
are coming from the north on U.S. 301, follow the same
directions given above. If you are coming from the south
on U.S. 301, look for the Brogden Road intersection, which will
indicate Brogden Road as a right turn, but turn left at this
intersection, and follow the directions above.
If you currently have a valid amateur license, you will need to
bring your license and a photocopy of the license. You
will also need a photo I.D, such as a driver license, school,
work, or military I.D., or D.M.V. issued I.D. card. If you
are under 18, the team will also accept your photograph with
your name in your school yearbook as a picture I.D.
Test fees for this year are still $15.00.
Pre-registration is not required.
The VE team will make every effort to accommodate persons with
special needs, such as visually impaired testing. You are
encouraged to contact either of the two VE team liaisons well in
advance of the session to advise us of any special needs you may
Finally, if you successfully upgrade and would like to donate

accept the donation to use in an upcoming radio class or to pass
